美國材料名校 Review Part 2 ~Purdue University

 當兵前時間無多,先從比較實際一點的學校看起,Berkeley,Stanford之類的夢幻名校以後有時間再說吧~Purdue也是一間以工學院著稱的名校,學校總排名普普只有64但是材料系卻有第14名,比哈佛材料(22)還高。許多教授似乎也都從這間學校畢業。但是代辦給我一個觀點,像Purdue這種大家都聽說過的學校,定的門檻也不高,一定有一堆人都去申請到最後反而變的競爭最激烈的學校。反而像史丹佛學費超貴名子又夢幻定的門檻又很高,大家一定都想說自己沒希望都放棄,反而使勇敢申請的人機會大增@@ 不知道這種搞逆向操作的觀念正不正確,反正我就通通給他申請下去就對了啦~ 至少用報名費來討個敗的心甘情願了理由

The School offers both MS and PhD degrees in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. These programs emphasize the application of the basic sciences to the understanding of the structure, properties, and processing of materials. Programs of study are designed to broaden and deepen the student's knowledge of those parts of the field which are of most universal applicability. Admission is open to students with undergraduate baccalaureate degrees not only in the field of Materials Science and Engineering but also in other engineering and science fields. Students are encouraged to apply early in the fall term. Admission is based upon prior performance and projected success as indicated by undergraduate scholastic performance, industrial work experience, and recommendations from those most familiar with the student's record. Admission is to the master's programs and only those with exceptional backgrounds are considered for direct admission to the PhD program.

研究走向:
Research in the Purdue School of Materials Engineering (MSE) crosses a wide spectrum of research topics including processing and evaluation of high temperature materials, biological and organic materials, electronic materials, nanoscale materials and structural materials.

Purdue MSE faculty are actively engaged in collaborations with faculty from almost every discipline of physical sciences and engineering with particularly strong efforts from collaborations with Pharmacy, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Aero/Astro Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Industrial Engineering.

MSE faculty, graduate and undergraduate students conduct experimental, theoretical and computational research on the physics of materials, physical properties, electrical properties, mechanical properties and electromechanical properties. Strengths in property evaluation, materials processing, computational modeling and structural characterization coincide with an increase in faculty size from twelve to twenty. This growth has fostered synergistic efforts that will further enhance growth of materials research at Purdue University.

設備儀器:
Microstructural Analysis Facility
The main function is to provide expertise, advice, and training on microstructural analysis needs of the Purdue community and outside users
X-Ray Facility
A broad range of x-ray diffraction capabilities are available in the facility and through the faculties association with a synchrotron beamline.
Turner Laboratory for Electroceramics
The focus of research is on electronic ceramics and the activities range from efforts to fabricate technologically important electronic products to attempts to understand the fundamentals of materials behavior.
Reinhardt Schuhmann, Jr. Laboratory
The lab is dedicated to experimental studies of the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of materials systems at high temperatures.
Processing Facility
Materials processing equipment includes special facilities for deformation processing, powder processing, solidification processing, and vapor processing.
Mechanical Testing Facility
The facilities are highlighted by three computer-controlled machines for mechanical testing.
Computational Facilities
This is among the largest and most varied academic computing resources in the nation, with systems ranging from supercomputers to microcomputers..
Birck Nanotechnology Center
The $58M Birck Nanotechnology Center opened in 2005. All of the state-of-the-art instrumentation, materials characterization tools and cleanroom facilities in the BNC are available for use by MSE graduate students, undergraduate researchers, faculty and postdoctoral fellows.
